The grapevine is a twine in regions with moderate, Mediterranean climate. Wild forms brought the grapes to fruition high up in the tree tops. But people trimmed the trees. The grapevine, loving the sun and thriving on permeable soil, still strives towards the sun.  The roots of the grapevine can grow several metres into the soil; it will not wither even in dry times. A relentless pest for the grapevines is the grape phylloxera. It came to Europe from America around 1860. The American grape varieties, however, were resistant.
